“THIS protest is just a warning shot. If the municipality doesn’t respond in time we will be forced to take further action!”
This warning was given yesterday by Nhlakanipho Lukhele (27), spokesman for the Thembelihle Crisis Committee.
Residents of Thembelihle, Lawley and Precast squatter camps near Lenasia, south of Joburg marched to their municipal office to demand that something was done about alleged corruption relating to the employment of workers for an electrification project.
The community, which has been protesting for electricity for 15 years, became furious when it was discovered councillor Janice Ndarala had allegedly chosen 15 people from nearby Lehae to work on the project, which started last month.
Residents also claimed Ndarala had appointed three spokespeople who were not qualified for the position.
“You’re only guaranteed work if you’re a card-carrying ANC member. This project should benefit people who live in Thembelihle,” said Nhlakanipho.
Ndarala denied the allegations.
“I was not involved in the appointment of the spokespeople. They submitted their CVs and were chosen by a lucky draw. The successful applicants were interviewed in my absence,” she said.
“I told people to submit their CVs to the municipal office.
“The mayor said all settlements around Joburg will receive electricity and the process started in Lawley.”
