RESIDENTS of Ndakana Village said a black coffin a farmer has put upright next to the road on the inside of his fence is traumatising them.

The villagers told Daily Sun the farmer from Stutterheim, Eastern Cape, didn’t bother to tell them he was going to display the coffin.

Nikiwe Tweni (30) said her kids recently came home and were frightened by it.

“Our kids use that road to go to school. Now my child is having nightmares. Some of the older kids told the younger ones there was a body inside it,” she said.

“Even older people are scared because we don’t know what’s in the coffin. Recently white people put a black person inside a coffin and now we’re seeing this? What does it mean?”

Nikiwe said they had given the farmer a week to remove the coffin but he has ignored them.

Ward committee member Noziphiwo Monelo said displaying a coffin like that was offensive to black people.

Community leader Lindelwa Xhasha said they called the cops to do something about the situation but the coffin was still there.

“This guy is going to take our kids and put them in that coffin.”

Police spokeswoman Captain Siphokazi Mawisa said police couldn’t comment as it wasn’t a criminal case.

Despite several attempts, the farmer could not be reached for comment.
