A 44-YEAR-OLD aunt was trusted by her 13-year-old nephew, who agreed to went with her to her place.

But she betrayed his trust by raping him.

So on Tuesday the Maphumulo Regional Court sentenced the woman to 15 years in jail for raping her nephew.

She was arrested in December after the victim’s mum reported the rape to the police.

The victim was at home in Maphumulo, on KZN’s north coast, when his aunt came and asked for his mother’s permission for him to accompany her to her place because it was so late at night.

A relative of the boy said it was now hard for the boy to trust anyone in his family.

“We trusted her, but she betrayed our trust and now the boy doesn’t trust anyone in the family,” said the relative.

Major Thulani Zwane said that the aunt raped her nephew in the night.

“She came into his mother’s homestead and asked him to accompany her to her place because it was late.

“The boy did not come back that night but the mother was not worried because she trusted the aunt. She was shocked when her boy came home crying and told her he had been raped,” said Zwane.

He said after the boy had told his mother, she rushed to the police station. “A case of rape was opened and the aunt was arrested,” Zwane said.

KZN police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said the sentence was suitable for the perpetrator: “It’s sad that a person who was supposed to protect the boy was the one who hurt him. I hope this sentence will send a strong message to other people who are thinking of committing the same crime.”
