THE ambulance overturned about 5km outside Wepener on the R26 with a patient on board.

The driver died on the spot!

The patient was being transported from Embekweni Hospital, near Zastron, to Pelonomi Hospital on Sunday when the accident happened.

Health spokesman Mondli Mvambi said: “The patient on board was not
injured during the accident.

“He was later taken to Pelonomi Hospital by helicopter.”

A witness said: “The ambulance was not driving very fast.

“I was riding my horse in the veld, looking after livestock, when I suddenly heard the screeching sound of brakes.

“There was a loud bang and then I saw the ambulance overturn.

“I didn’t want to go closer. I was afraid it might explode. Emergency vehicles arrived after a while.”

Another witness said: “This road is very dangerous. Accidents happen here all the time.

“Christmas is just around the corner and the road is going to be very busy.

“Prayers and rituals are needed to cut down the number of accidents on this road.”

Police spokesman Yanga Ngcukana confirmed that an accident took place.

A case of culpable homicide has
been opened.
