SINGER AMSTEL Makwane urged members of the gay community to continue teaching society about homosexuality.
Amstel is the only remaining member of Afro-pop group 3Sum, following the death of former members Jeff Moyo and Koyo Bala.
Speaking at the Chevrolet Feather Awards dialogue held at Mmabana Arts, Culture and Sports Foundation in Mahikeng on Saturday, Amstel said: “A lot of progress has been made since we started the fight against the discrimination of gays and lesbians. I’m happy because we took a stand and fought for our rights. We want people to know we are here to stay and we deserve equal treatment.
“I urge the youth to come out and talk about issues regarding homosexuality. Break the silence and live your life,” said Amstel.
Former SABC1 presenter Lumko Johnson said: “Gay people are still isolated and rejected from the church, where they expect to feel at home. The struggle for our rights continues.
“We thank the likes of 3Sum and Somizi Mhlongo, who took a firm stand on discrimination against gays and lesbians.”
Reggy Maleme, a pastor at the Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa, said he has been insulted for being gay.
“People say I’m a sinner but I told them not to be quick to judge. We are all made in the image of the Lord and we are equal before Him.”
The annual award ceremony celebrates all those who support, inspire and empower members of the gay community.
