DJ TIRA had blood on his hands on Saturday – but it was for a good reason.

The popular club DJ and music producer took part in the slaughter of the cow during umabo, a traditional ceremony hosted at his rural home of KwaHlabisa, in KZN.

The popular musician, whose real name is Mthokozi Khathi, recently married his wife Gugu. But they didn’t perform umabo.

During the ceremony, the two families come together and the bride is introduced to the ancestors.

Traditionally, the bride’s family has to offer gifts to the groom’s family after the traditional wedding.

DJ Tira was born and raised in the area and on Saturday, the residents hailed him as their hero, who put their kasi on the map.

Jabulile Zondi, a resident, described Tira as a role model to the youth.

“He is our hero. When he was a little boy, we had no idea he was going to be a star. But now he is a well- known DJ and businessman. Our area is respected because of him,” she said.

Another resident, Bongumusa Dladla, said he looks up to the popular DJ.

“He is a wise businessman. He showed us we mustn’t look down on ourselves. When I introduce myself, I’m not ashamed to mention this area because it has produced Mzansi’s top DJ,” said Bongumusa.

DJ Tira said: “I spent most of my time indoors when I was a kid. My dream was to become a successful businessman.

“I’m happy to be a good example to other young people.”
