One of Mzansi’s favourite IT girls, Thando Thabethe was almost the victim of a money extortion scam.

Luckily, our girl is smart, and she saw right through it.

Thando took to Twitter yesterday to share how a man claiming to be Free State premier, Ace Magashule, tried to extort money from her.

The man apparently called Thando’s manager, pretended to be Mr Magashule, and asked to speak directly to the TV and radio personality.

“And as freelancers work comes from everywhere and everywhere so he gives me his no. I call back...he claims there's a girl stranded,” Thando tweeted.

“[He] says he has called Basetsana Khumalo who says she is out of town & advised him to call me for assistance,” she continued.

The man then told Thando that there was a girl who was stranded and in urgent need of petrol money.

He asked Thando to eWallet the money to a specific number.

“[The] girl calls "panting and in a panicking" ...then I think to myself WHY would the premier call ME of all ppl to ask for money,” she said.

And just like that Thando avoided what a few celebrities have reported falling victim to in the recent past.

“Anyway be careful out there...this also makes it so hard to discern the fake from the ppl who really need assistance,” she concluded.
