DANCE music has always united the world.
Producers, DJs and partygoers love this type of music because it speaks one language on the dance floor. Soul Candi is one of the biggest dance music record labels in Mzansi.
The company, known for its hot parties, has now introduced annual dance music awards to celebrate the culture around this type of music and places where it’s played.
Fans have a chance to vote for their favourite acts, producers, DJs and clubs across 20 categories.
These include:
- Best Album
- Best Club
- Best Dance
- Best Electronic Dance Music
- Best Woman DJ
- Best Woman Artist
- Best Festival
- Best International DJ
One of the nominees is DJ Lady Sakhe (real name Sakhe Motshoene). She will be up against DJs Zinhle, Lady Lea, Simstar and Abby Nurock in the Best Woman DJ category.
Sakhe comes from Pimville in Soweto and is a deep house DJ. She has been spinning the decks for more than 16 years.
Speaking to SunBuzz about her nomination, she said: “It came as a shock. I knew I had fans and people who enjoyed my work.
“But I didn’t think the support was so powerful that I’d end up being nominated and be among the top five woman DJs.
“We all play different sounds, which makes this an interesting
category.”
The spin master is signed under DJ Christos’ label Katsaitis Music and she hosts deep house sessions with him.
She is also a resident DJ on Metro FM’s Urban Beat every Friday and Saturday, which has received a nomination for Best Dance Show
on Radio.
Sakhe said: “I am thankful for this. It proves that being consistent and believing in your dreams pay off. This is a big step for me and will open other doors.”
Organiser Ricardo da Costa from Soul Candi said they will organise a dinner to give the winners their trophies.
People can vote on the website www.dmasa.co.za for their favourite dance music act.
- The private awards ceremony will take place on 5 October.
