THE comedy scene in Mzansi is blossoming, with many new acts on the horizon.
For one night only, fans have a chance to see some of the new kids on the block showing what they are made of at the Savanna Newcomer Showcase on 29 May at Soweto Theatre, Jabulani.
This is a chance for people to see if the comedians have what it takes to be nominated for the best newcomer award at the Comics Choice Awards.
The show will see 20 new comedians, many of whom have never performed in front of a large audience, do a 5-minute stand-up comedy set.
There will be special guest performances and appearances by previous newcomer award winners Yaaseen Barnes, Loyiso Madinga, Schalk Bezuidenhout, Dillan Oliphant and Deep Fried Man.
Speaking to SunBuzz, Dillan said being honoured with the award in 2012 meant a lot to him.
Known now as the king of one-liners, Dillan has since had his own one man show called The Oliphant In the Room.
“I am an award-winning comedian because of this. Even being nominated felt like I belonged to the industry,” he said.
Dillan said it was difficult for newcomers to get known.
“The nomination and possible win is just the beginning. After everything, it will be about proving why you won and working hard to find your place in the industry,” said the funny man.
Even though the newcomer award is not open to a public vote, members of the public attending the show will be able to vote for their favourite comedian on the night. These votes will be added to the industry’s votes to select five nominees who’ll be announced on 6 July.
Doors open at the Soweto Theatre at 2.30pm for a pre-show shisa nyama, banging house tunes from Kaya FM DJs and a cider on arrival.
- Tickets are R100 and are on sale now at www.webtickets.co.za, Pick ‘n Pay stores and www.sowetotheatre.co.za.
