ZOLISA XALUVA changed his bath-time routine to prepare for his role in e.tv’s Hustle.
He plays the role of a mechanic, known as Bra X, in the local drama series which highlights Mzansi’s tough music industry.
“I’d shower twice a week only, because I wanted to smell like most mechanics in the townships.
“I’m not saying mechanics don’t shower, but I felt it would help me with my portrayal of this deeply intense character.
“I also minimised human contact because I didn’t smell or look very good,” he told SunBuzz.
The actor said he has some things in common with his character: both are loyal, kind and gentle souls – very comfortable with themselves.
Describing his character on the show, he said: “Bra X is a devoted husband whose life is turned upside down when his estranged sister-in-law, Kitt, forces her way back into the family.
“He’s a simple man with limited education, but he doesn’t lack intelligence. He’s a mechanic who’s devoted to his wife and the church.”
Bra X added: “In my quest to avoid typecasting I was completely drawn to him.
“My director was also keen and thought it would be refreshing for my established audience.”
Although acting is his bread and butter, the actor has a newfound interest in producing his own work.
“My team and I have developed three seasons of a riveting series I hope will be snatched up,” he said.
The actor was known as Jason in Generations. Asked if it bothers him that people still refer to him as “Jason”, he said: “I played Jason for a long time, so it would be unfair to expect people to just forget that.
- “But I hope they tag along for the Bra X journey.”Hustle airs every Monday on e.tv (DStv channel 194) at 9.30pm.
