Sebona: We Were Hit By Lightning!

accreditation

Moroka Swallows former winger Lucas Sebona recalls how they survived a lightning strike in a game against Jomo Cosmos.

Sebona, who played for Swallows for almost a decade, implied that the bolt of lightning resulted from Muti being used against them.

When asked about a funny incident that comes to mind in his Still In Touch interview in the latest Soccer Laduma edition, Sebona said; “The one that I remember, which was quite a scary experience, was when we were hit by lightning.

“I think it was [against] Jomo Cosmos. We had a famous inyanga back then, and we were hurriedly taken away from the scene on his instruction.”

“Also, muti was used a lot there (at Swallows), hey. They didn’t need your permission to start doing all that stuff on you as a player. I’m someone who never believed in muti.”

The Middelburg-born former player also explained what would happen if a player refused to be part of the muti rituals at the club back in the days.

“They sideline you. You won’t be able to play. Phela wonk’ umuntu bekane (In fact, everyone used to have) input. Even the muti man would say, “No, let’s no play him. He’s going to kill my muti this one,” he said.
