Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane has opened up on being benched by recently elevated head coach Rulani Mokwena.

Mokwena was appointed as the sole head coach following the restructuring of the technical team after Sundowns' exit in the MTN8 at the hands of Orlando Pirates in October.

Zwane says he welcomes the decision, as Mokwena is someone who is inquisitive and his penchant for learning new things is liked by players, as it improves their game.

"It's okay, it's always good coach Rulani because you know he's an intelligent guy, he always learns," Zwane said on Metro FM Sports.

"He always comes with new things at training and it helps us as players to improve.

"You know as a player you want to improve so you can better your game, so ja it's great."

However, Zwane's game-time prospects has seemingly diminished since Mokwena took over, as he was snubbed of a starting spot in Sundowns 5-0 thrashing of Maritzburg United and the comprehensive 3-0 win over Royal AM.

Against Maritzburg, Mokwena's first match in charge as a head coach, 'Mshishi' was an unused substitute but the Bafana Bafana midfielder came off the bench to replace Haashim Domingo in the last half-an-hour against Thwihli Thwahla.

The 33-year old says he accepts the competition for places in the team and will always be available to give his best, even off the bench.

"It's about the competition in the team, if someone is doing better, he needs to play. It's about someone who is performing and doing well at that time to play," Zwane said.

"Because it's about the team at the end of the day, so for me, I was just happy to come in and help my team you know (off the bench). I'll always be available whenever the team needs me," he added.

The Brazilians will resume their DStv Premiership season when they host rivals Orlando Pirates on 30 December at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. The defending champions are five points clear at the top of the log, with a game in hand after 12 rounds of matches.
