After parting ways with D.C. United on the weekend, Wayne Rooney has been linked with the managerial role at Birmingham City.

After vacating his post at MLS side D.C. United, Wayne Rooney is now reportedly on the verge of taking charge of an English club back in his homeland.

The American team announced on Sunday that it had parted ways with the former Manchester United star following a mutual agreement.

After a two-year stint as Derby County manager, the former England international took over the Black-and-Red in July last year, and went on to improve D.C. United's points tally from the previous season, finishing the latest campaign with 40 points and narrowly missing out on the 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs.

"We are grateful to Wayne Rooney for all he has done for our club and for soccer in the Nation's Capital, first as a D.C. United player and captain and most recently as our coach," the club's CEO Jason Levien said in a statement.

The 37-year-old could now be making a return to his home country, with reports suggesting he is the main candidate to replace John Eustace as manager of Birmingham City, who are co-owned by NFL legend Tom Brady.

According to the Daily Mail, Rooney has been on the club's radar since September, when doubts first began arising over Eustace's future at the club, with Birmingham confirming on Monday morning that they had relieved the latter of his duties.

Upon his exit from D.C. United, Rooney admitted that he feels it is the right time to return to England, but also insisted at the time that he did not have a managerial job waiting for him.

"And then, what lies ahead? Whether opportunities come up? I've seen a lot of reports in the media. I don't have anything lined up," he said on the weekend, per the Mail.
