Liverpool have now officially made another new addition to their list of summer signings, one that has caught many off-guard!

The Reds have officially announced the signing of Japanese midfielder Wataru Endo from Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart for a reported fee of £16.2 million (R392 million).

A statement from the club read: "Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Wataru Endo from VfB Stuttgart on a long-term contract, subject to international clearance and work permit application.

"The Japan international will become the Reds' third signing of the summer after finalising personal terms and successfully completing a medical.

"Endo will take the No. 3 jersey for the club – and he's looking forward to starting the new chapter of his career at Anfield."

Manager Jurgen Klopp told LFCTV: Klopp: "I'm really happy, I know in this world of football how it goes and stuff like this, but have a look, because he's a really good player.

"Experienced player, captain of Stuttgart, captain of Japan, speaks good English, nice fella, family man, machine on the pitch, good footballer on top of that, sensational attitude.

"He's a good footballer, very experienced and loves to work extremely hard."

The 30-year-old will be expected to not only bring a wealth of experience to the side, but also leadership. Endo was captain of Stuttgart before he left, and is the Japanese national side's skipper too.

He now joins other new midfield acquisitions Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai at the Merseyside club, potentially forming a new-look engine room for the side.

The defensive midfielder's signing comes after Liverpool missed out on Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo, both of whom opted for moves to Chelsea.

Endo represented Japan at both the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, playing a pivotal role in the team's progression from the group stage at the showpiece in Qatar, before they narrowly lost to Croatia on penalties in the round of 16.
