Two Libyan clubs playing in CAF competitions have asked the football organising body to postpone their upcoming matches after floods claimed the lives of five footballers in the country.

With five African footballers' lives tragically being claimed by devastating floods, two teams in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup are now calling for the postponement of their upcoming continental fixtures.

As many as 20 000 people are said to have lost their lives in Libya after a massive storm led to dams bursting, causing sweeping floods that have destroyed the eastern port city of Derna.

Five footballers are believed to have also been killed during the disaster, with thousands more having been reported missing.

According to BBC Sport Africa, the Libyan Football Federation has officially announced the deaths of four players in the region, namely Shaheen Al-Jamil, Monder Sadaqa, and brothers Saleh and Ayoub Sasi.

Sadaqa and Al-Jamil represented Darnes FC and Al-Tahaddi, respectively, in Libya's top flight, while the Sasi brothers were part of youth teams at Darnes.

The fifth player believed to have perished in the floods is Ibrahim Al-Qaziri, who plied his trade in the country's second tier.

Libyan giants Al Ahly Benghazi and Al Hilal have since asked CAF to postpone their respective upcoming Champions League and Confed Cup games this weekend in light of the catastrophic events.

Al Hilal club official Ali Al Sharif told BBC Sport Africa: "The situation is really not suitable for playing football in light of the disaster that befell us."

They are scheduled to take on Rwandan outfit Rayon Sport in the CAFCC on Friday, while Al Ahly Benghazi are currently set to play against ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast in the CAFCL on Sunday.

While they are yet to receive an answer to their request, CAF has confirmed that it "will observe a moment of silence at all its football matches to respect and honour the people who lost their lives in the catastrophic earthquake in Morocco and the floods in Libya".
