Former Kaizer Chiefs star Leonardo Castro is doing exceptionally well at his club in the United States, with the striker having scooped up a big award and a new deal. Here's a look at the what the Colombian has been up to!

The story

It has been almost been a year-and-a-half since Castro left Kaizer Chiefs after spending seven years in the South African topflight, where he also represented Mamelodi Sundowns for two-and-a-half seasons.

In March 2022, he joined US third-tier side Greenville Triumph SC as a free agent and he has since registered 13 goals and four assists in 32 outings for the club, according to Transfermarkt.

He has since been named the Greenville's Attacking Player of The Year and it was also announced earlier this week that the club have decided to retain his services for the 2024 USL 1 campaign.  After his difficult spell at Naturena, Castro has now found joy in South Carolina - state that is home to icons like legendary singer James Brown and comedy superstar Chris Rock.

Although the centre-forward does not do a lot of posting on social media, his wife Estefania Burbano, has been quite active on Instagram, revealing glimpses of their tight-knit family life in the US.

The family recently visited the aquarium to explore some marine life, while they have also been spotted at other attractions the state has to offer like the Falls Park on the Reedy and they were also at the Miami Children's Musuem for a fun day for their two children.

Football Matters

Castro also made headlines in Mzansi a few months ago when he said he wasn't surprised with the way his former Chiefs regressed.

"Chiefs is not supposed to be where they are now and everyone knows thatthe club needs to find a solution," he told KickOff back in August. "I’m not surprised that they are where they are now because the issue of going to the market to get real quality players is going to cost money. I don’t know what the budget of Chiefs is because that is only known by those inside the club.

He questioned the quality of the current squad, adding: "It doesn’t matter whether they bring Pep Guardiola, Pitso Mosimane, or whoever but if they don’t have the budget to get quality and improve the team then it will be the same.

"The more quality on the field, the more success you will get. Just look at (Mamelodi) Sundowns and the kind of quality that they are recruiting.

"Coach Rulani (Mokwena) went to (Orlando) Pirates, and the same thing happened but when he went to better quality at Sundowns he is winning.

"For me it doesn’t matter if Pep comes to Chiefs or Pirates if the quality is notthere, he won’t win trophies.

His remarks have turned out true to some degree, as Amakhosi have already sacked manager Molefi Ntseki and lost six of their first 13 league games.
