With former Kaizer Chiefs star Teddy Akumu's stint abroad coming to a end, here's a look at his short-lived experience in Japan!

The story

Akumu's contract with Japanese outfit Sagan Tosu has come to an end less than a year since joining the club. This is despite the fact that his deal was due to expire in June 2025, according to Transfermarkt. It has been a spell to forget for the Kenyan, as he played less than 200 minutes in four games.

The former Zesco United star is locally remembered for his time at Naturena, where he made 47 appearances during two-and-a-half years at the club.

While it may have ended in disappointment in Japan, the 31-year-old certainly had a few good moments off the pitch in a country known for technological innovation and a world-class railway system.

One of the first places he visited was the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, a special place of learning, culture, and the arts. The tourist site is said to welcome more than 10 million visitors a year and it is considered as one of Japan's most important Shinto shrines and a top destination in the city of Fukuoka.

Akumu seems to have received a warm welcome at this prestigious temple, as he was seen in the company of diligent tourist guides.!

Of course, fine dining was also on the itinerary as many would expect, as the defensive midfielder visited the Hanayashiki amusement park, which is the oldest in the country as its been operating since 1853. In the video below, Akumu appeared ready to feast on some mouthwatering Japanese cuisine.

According to the restaurant's official website, Hanayashiki is a restaurant located in a grove of trees, with a vast site of 4,000 tsubo (tsubo are units of measurement) and a beautiful green forest. Patrons can also enjoy their meal while listening to live music such as the piano.

Football matters

Although things have been rough at club level, he has enjoyed some success on the international stage, as he has played the full 90 minutes in each of Kenya's last seven games, including 2-2 draw against Russia where he scored.

He also played in the recent 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Gabon and Seychelles.
