MZANSI’S giant cellular network provider, Telkom, has made a grand entrance into the ever-growing 5G market.
Telkom 5G network was officially launched, in collaboration with Huawei, on Thursday, 27 October, at the DP World Wanderers Stadium in Joburg.
The network is an ultra-speed, superior internet connection that supersedes the previous LTE and 4G connections.
Speaking at the launch, Telkom consumer and business CEO Lunga Siyo said an additional spectrum had been increased into their connectivity ecosystem.
“Although 5G stands head and shoulders above 4G and LTE through its faster and more reliable connection, we needed to make sure that our existing 4G ecosystem remains strong while introducing 5G into the market,” Siyo said.
In a bid to ensure that no one was left behind in this 5G journey, Telkom and Huawei also announced that they would embark on regional 5G experiences to provide an opportunity for consumers to witness its impact.
Huawei South Africa director Fortune Wang said Telkom’s 5G would support new services for consumers, like online AR/VR gaming and UHD streaming.
“We look forward to creating opportunities for consumers and business, beyond connectivity, into intelligent digital services,” Wang said.
Telkom also announced its partnership with Wanderers Stadium to showcase innovative digital entertainment, and make it the first 5G stadium on the continent.
