THE week from Monday, 5 June to Friday, 9 June was a rather interesting one for South Africans.

It started with news of the death of former minister, Tina Joemat-Pettersson and included the memorial service and burial of veteran broadcaster, Eusebius McKaiser at The Settlers Monument in Makanda, Eastern Cape over the weekend.

But that's not the only thing that shook Mzansi. Parts of Gauteng felt tremors on Sunday morning, 11 June from what is believed to be an earthquake.

The tremor, which was mostly felt in the East Rand around 2:38am, had a 4.8 magnitude and the epicenter was suspected to be in Boksburg.

Many terrified residents took to social media to share the lasting effects of the earthquake. Many had their windows shattered while some shared stories of trembling doors.

Just when people were getting over the earthquake, news broke that a ninth suspect in the Thabo Bester prison escape was arrested.

Police spokeswoman, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, said the 31-year-old Zimbabwean national was arrested in Johannesburg on Sunday, 11 June.

“He faces a charge of assisting an inmate escape from lawful custody. The suspect is likely to face more charges,” said Mathe, adding that the suspect is expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 13 June.

Meanwhile, more blood spilled in Free State when Detective Warrant Officer Neels du Rand (48) was killed while investigating a truck hijacking along the N3 near Villiers on Friday, 9 June at around 3am.

Two suspects have since been arrested for murder and are due to appear in court soon.

On a rather lighter note, Carling Black Label hosted the Champions Day Activation On Saturday, 10 June.

The fun filled event took place at the Shine Studios in Braamfontein, Johannesburg and was jam packed with a variety of games and screening of a Champions League match between Manchester City and  Inter Milan.

Of course, Man City remained undefeated throughout the whole champions league campaign. This was their first champions league trophy with the results ending 1-0.

And finally the 96th edition of the Comrades Marathon 2023 took place on Sunday, 11 June in Pietermaritzburg bright and early at 5am.

Securing his number on spot for two years in a row was Tete Dijana all the way from North West. He remained supreme with a record-breaking time of 5 hours, 13 minutes, and 58 seconds.
