I USED to say I’m not afraid of death, but what I heard in the early hours of Sunday, 11 June made me regrets my words.
These were the words of Sipho Mtshali, one of the residents from Ekurhuleni, who were woken up by a tremor in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Information recorded by the Council of Geoscience indicated that the earthquake recorded a 4.7 magnitude with the epicentre being in Alberton. It’s not yet known if the tremor was due to natural seismic activity or from mining activity.
Sipho (45) of Dindela Section in Vosloorus said he is one of those people who does not hear anything when he's asleep even if it's gunshots.

But he said he felt the earthquake on Sunday and found himself holding the bed.
“I thought the house was going to collapse and I would find myself in a big hole. This was a traumatic experience that made me realise that death can happen at any time," he said.
Paul Nkosi of Vosloorus said: “There was a wide and strange noise from the windows and the walls. The next thing dogs were barking and there were car alarms. I’m thankful nothing happened in the house. This shows we are living by the grace of God."
Thandi Madlala (63) from Duduza in Ekurhuleni said: “This earthquake has made me realise how important it is to be near God all the time. I was so terrified I kept praying. I couldn't sleep until 5:00am. I felt the bed shake and thought this is the end of the world. This was the first time I experienced such thing in my life.”
