A GROUP of three men picked up something in the bushes while returning from a prayer session, and they didn't know what it was.

This is how the community members of Braamfischerville near Roodepoort narrated the story of a man who died from an explosion earlier today.

According to community members, the three men were curious about the item they had picked and its use and decided to test it out.

It is alleged that the three men got to their home and plugged in the object to electrical connections, and that's when the explosion happened.

One person was killed and another injured due to this explosion. According to EMS spokeswoman Xolile Khumalo, the explosives are believed to be linked to illegal mining.

"The City of Johannesburg firefighters responded to the explosive incident in Braamfischerville. The explosion resulted from a dynamite that was connected to a battery. Three bodies have been affected during this incident," she said.

She added that one person succumbed to the injuries sustained due to the explosion while one was rushed to hospital for treatment and the other sustained minor injuries.

"The incident is suspected to be an illegal mining operation," she concluded.

Nhlanhla Nkomo, a cousin to the deceased, told Daily Sun that they are still in shock at what had happened and are still processing it.

"We are shocked and still can't believe what happened and how it happened. We have so many questions," he said.

He added that the deceased is a Zimbabwean national.

Another family member said they only received a call that they had lost the 34-year-old Rapson Dube from an explosive in his shack.
