A FAMILY wants answers after Themba Kubeka (58) was killed in a horrific accident on Friday night, 9 June.

It is alleged that a drunk bus driver ran away after the crash, leaving a bakkie passenger, Themba, trapped to death in Sebokeng, Vaal.

Themba's sister, Sizakele Kubeka (38), told Daily Sun that they received a call from the driver who was with his brother, alerting them that they had an accident.

She said when they arrived at the scene, the bus driver was nowhere to be seen.

“Only Ipelegeng bus officials, police and the bus passengers were there, but there was no sign of the bus driver as he had fled,” Sizakele said.

She said when they asked about the whereabouts of the bus driver, the cops told them they had taken him to the police station, and the bus officials said they had taken him to the bus depot, which was confusing.

“After 30 minutes, the bus driver showed up and told the family that he ran away after the crash because of the shock,” she said.

Sizakele said they asked the police whether they took the bus driver to the hospital to take blood samples as he was drunk, but the police allegedly said they didn’t have test kits.

Themba's other sister, Phumzile Kubeka (35), said the family was treated badly at the scene by the police, adding that she blames the bus driver for her brother's death.

"I think if he had tried by all means to avoid the crash, my brother could still be alive today," she said.

Ipelegeng Bus departmental manager, Westor Sefudi, said police were investigating the incident, adding that they had also launched their internal investigation.

Sefudi also sent condolences to the Kubeka family.

Gauteng police spokeswoman Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said cops were investigating a possible case of culpable homicide.
