An accident on the N12 road between Phola and eMalahleni on Saturday, 10 June, has claimed four lives.

The bodies of three women and a man were found scattered on the road.

According to Mpumalanga Community Safety Security spokesman, Moeti Mmusi, the incident happened during a collision between a light delivery vehicle (LDV) and a sedan.

He said eight other people sustained injuries and were transported by emergency personnel to a nearby hospital for treatment.

"The details of the crash are sketchy at the moment. It is, however, believed that one of the vehicles involved lost control, veered off its lane and rolled several times before colliding with a vehicle that came from the opposite direction," he said.

Mmusi said the occupants were ejected out of the two vehicles and their bodies flew onto the road. It is therefore unknown whether the two drivers were among the four who died on impact at the scene.

He said the emergency personnel who responded to the scene found the debris of the two vehicles which included the engine of one of the vehicles on the road.

"One of the vehicles was also pulling a trailer. The investigation into the crash has already commenced and cops are investigating the matter," said Mmusi.

The Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe, is calling for cautious driving in order to prevent the loss of lives on the road.

"Let's be responsible road users who respect the rules of the road at all times. Every person who sits behind the steering wheel must prioritise their safety and that of other road users at all times," added the MEC.

Shongwe has sent his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and also wishes the injured a speedy recovery.
