FAMILIES, friends and community members in Beverly Hills, Evaton commemorated Freedom Day by remembering the late Relebohile Mofokeng and Palesa Mokhele.

They did this by displaying a crime scene of dead bodies. The day was aimed at creating awareness on gender-based violence.

Relebohile was allegedly tortured and killed in the early hours of 2 March over groove money. Daily Sun published the story on 6 March with the headline: Deadly torture over groove zaka!

It was reported that Relebohile was tortured to death by five friends after they accused her of stealing R2 500. She was allegedly tortured with a plastic bag and was also allegedly raped.

Two suspects, a boyfriend and girlfriend, were arrested after they handed themselves over to police. Three other suspects were arrested on Monday, 22 April and appeared in court on Wednesday, 24 April. They will reappear in court on Tuesday, 30 April for a bail hearing.

Relebohile's sister, Mpho, said: “We are happy that all five friends are now behind bars and will take responsibility for killing my sister for such a little amount of money.”

Palesa's family still can’t get closure for their daughter's death, who was murdered by her boyfriend. The family told Daily Sun they organised the awareness campaign in support of Relebohile and to get justice.

Palesa's sister, Lebogang (40) from Boitumelo near Sebokeng told the People’s Paper that her sister was brutally murdered by her boyfriend in 2018 before running away.

He was caught in 2020 and sentenced to 10 years, but only served three years.

“There’s no reason to celebrate Freedom Day while the justice system is failing GBV victims and their families. We are supporting the Mofokeng family and hope they get justice, where their daughter’s killers each get a life sentence,” she said.
