THE newly formed uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) political party engaged in a motorcade at KwaMashu, KZN.

Although former president Jacob Zuma was not there, residents were happy to see the party members as they greeted and shouted Zuma's name.

Others whistled as the cars drove past their homes at different sections in KwaMashu, north of Durban on Sunday, 7 January.

KwaMashu MK members gathered at the Princess Magogo Stadium, where they began their motorcade, which drove through 10 sections before stopping at the Bridge City Shopping Centre.

As they drove through the different sections, residents were happy to see them as they went out of their houses, waving and thanking them for forming MK.

Some residents were even asking for the party's T-shirts.

In KwaMancinza, a resident, Khethiwe Gcabashe (30), said that she was happy to see the MK members driving passing in her area.

"I believe that this party will bring good changes in our lives. The current ruling party has failed us."

Another excited resident, Vusi Sibaya (40), said they lived in shacks for several years and believed the new party would build proper houses for them.

The MK's organiser of the province, Thami Ntuli, said people had lost hope in President Cyril Ramaphosa, so when they heard about the MK, they were happy and over a million registered for MK.

"People are unemployed. We run out of water and electricity. Things are bad. What we are doing now we're trying to bring back hope to people," he said.

Another organiser, David Shezi, said: "We started MK three years ago after we marched to the ANC provincial office. But they didn't listen and then we decided to meet with our commander Zuma. Then the matter of the MK was discussed."

He said they're busy mobilising people.

"We don't have permanent structures, but we have coordinators. So far, we can see that people are happy for MK. We've been doing motorcade in different places in Durban and people are happy. Today there are too many cars that I can't even count that were part of the motorcade," he said.

Zuma announced the MK in December 2023.

The party is registered with the Electoral Commission (IEC).
