A GROUP of about five thugs allegedly robbed an ATM at a shopping centre in Standerton, Mpumalanga.

But four of the thugs managed to flee, while one was caught in possession of R100 000.

Police spokesman Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, said a good partnership between the police and local security guards led to the arrest of the 34-year-old suspect on Sunday, 2 April.

"During his arrest, the man was found with more than R100 000 in his possession as well as a toy gun and the magazine of a pistol," he said.

Mohlala said the group was travelling in a purple VW Polo.

"It is alleged that they somehow gained access to where the money was and took an undisclosed amount of cash from the ATM. An alarm was activated, which notified the security company who in turn alerted the Standerton SAPS.

"Four suspects managed to flee, but one could not make it as law enforcement agencies collaborated their resources and cornered him. He was charged with burglary as well as for possession of suspected stolen cash," he said.

Mohlala said the SAPS management has welcomed the arrest as well as the recovery of the cash.

NPA spokeswoman Monica Nyuswa said the accused appeared in court for hijacking, theft, kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances and possession of unlicensed firearm.

"The matter has been postponed until 12 April for formal bail application," said Nyuswa.
