This is the truck that five men tried to hijack on Monday, 11 September.

THEY planned to hijack a truck, so one of the thugs jumped onto the truck.

However, the truck driver sped off before he could do so.

So the thug and his friends decided to lie to the police that the truck driver was fleeing after he robbed a woman.

The police then chased the truck on Monday, 11 September and interrogated the driver. The vehicle was also searched, but the police found nothing.

However, the truck driver told the police that he was fleeing as the same men had been following his truck all the way from Heidelberg, Ekurhuleni.

When the police interrogated the men, their story did not add up. So, the police searched their cars, which were found to have been stolen and had false registration numbers. The five men were bust on the spot.

Lieutenant-Colonel Kelebogile Thepa of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) said cops arrested five male suspects aged between 37 and 48 for possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles in the Brakpan area.

"As officers were conducting law enforcement duties, they were approached by a white Toyota Yaris and a grey Toyota Tazz that alleged that a truck had robbed a female victim of her belongings.

"The officers chased the truck and when the truck came to a halt, the officers checked for the alleged stolen items which were a phone and a handbag, but nothing was initially found," said Thepa.

She said the 42-year-old truck driver explained that the Toyota Yaris and Toyota Tazz had been following him since Heidelburg.

The truck driver alleged that one of the occupants came to him as his colleague was climbing off and said he was asking for a lift to Sandton. The truck driver refused, yet the man tried to forcibly climb on the truck. However, the truck driver immediately drove off and they followed him.

Thepa said cops found that the Toyota Yaris was fitted with false registration number plates and was reported stolen in the West Rand.

The Toyota Tazz had three separate vehicle identification numbers (VIN), however, officers managed to find the owner, who claimed that the vehicle was forfeited to the state and he no longer owned it.

The suspects appeared in court on Wednesday, 13 September and the case was postponed to Monday 18, September.
