THUGS who hijacked trucks in Tshwane while impersonating Gauteng traffic police were arrested on Friday, 28 July.

According to Tshwane District Police Commissioner, Major-General Azwinndini Nengovhela, the two suspects were arrested in Atteridgeville policing area following six months of investigation.

"These suspects were in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, jamming equipment, false number plates and several uniforms and equipment from Gauteng traffic," he said.

He said detectives from various police stations in the city also arrested many suspects including those involved in gender-based violence.

Nengovhela said the police's Operation Shanela, which started on Sunday, 23 July led to the arrest of 981 criminals and the recovery of five firearms. The operation was conducted in various parts of Tshwane where undocumented immigrants, motorists driving under the influence of alcohol and suspects in possession of drugs were arrested.

Furthermore, Nengovhela said liquor outlets contravening the Liquor Act were closed and the confiscated liquor would be destroyed. He said during the operation, second hand goods premises were inspected and subsequently fined for not complying with the Second Hand Goods Act.

"We take great pride in announcing the successful apprehension of 981 offenders during five separate and highly effective operations this week, showcasing their unwavering commitment to protect their communities," he said.

He said throughout the week a total of 2 892 individuals and 1 397 vehicles underwent thorough searches at roadblocks, resulting in the issuing of 363 Aarto fines totaling R310 300.

"All seized firearms will undergo ballistic analysis to determine any potential involvement in other criminal activities," he said.

Some law enforcement agencies who were part of the operation include the Departments of Home Affairs, Labour, Correctional Services and Community Safety, as well as crime prevention wardens, Tracker, Gauteng traffic, Tshwane metro police, local councillors and Community Policing Forums.

Some residents in Mamelodi said they support and appreciate police operations.

Don Mabena (56) said: "The police need us as the community to end crime. Crime not only affects elders, but children as well."

Lebogang Maluleke (32) said: "We call on people to help the police remove criminals in their communities. I appeal to the community to become watchdogs of crime in our areas."
