A JOURNALIST and editor of a media company was left high and dry after his personal belongings were stolen from his car in the inner city of Polokwane in Limpopo.

Styles Lucus Ledwaba, founder of Mukurukuru Media in Polokwane, told Daily Sun that on Thursday, 29 February, thugs had broken into his car and stole his bags, one of which contained his work equipment, a laptop, cellphone and an external drive with all his work.

This happened on Excelsior Street, where he was parked and, at the time, had had gone inside a store.

Eager to find out who the person behind this evil crime was, Styles consulted the store where he was for their CCTV footage hoping to find the suspects.

"We saw the guy in the footage. He had gone past the car three times, and you could see him breaking into the car, taking the two bags and disappearing into the crowd. Keep in mind this is near the taxi rank where there are a lot of people," he said.

Styles said he was concerned that his work might land on the wrong hands.

"The external drive has my work…As a journalist, we deal with sensitive information, and deal with people in the public office whose contacts are there. You never know what people can do with this information. This is why I've alerted people to be cautious."

Speaking to the chairman of the Community Policing Form, Rudolph Phaswane, he said such crimes are common in the CBD.

He said between 6 and 12 February, police recorded 13 cases of theft associated with cars, emphasising that weekly, 10 cases were reported.

Phawane said this was worrying as thugs have become smarter with their tactics, from remote-jamming cars to some even acting as if they are there to wash people's cars only to steal.

Police spokesman, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that a case of theft out of the car had been opened.

"No arrests have been made at this stage, and the matter is under police investigation," he added.
