THE slain Dobsonville doctor will be laid to rest on Tuesday, 5 March, at the Nasrec Memorial Park.

Dr Michael Isabelle died after he was shot at his surgery in Dobsonville, Soweto.

He was shot during a suspected robbery.

Dr Michael was loved by the community and, during his memorial service, was described as a selfless man who served the people's lives.

During the memorial service, which was held Friday, 1 March, at the Sandton Convention Centre, his family revealed that the doctor had been shot before. Fortunately, at that time, he survived the shooting.

They said that during Covid-19, his surgery was looted, and he stayed at home for a year without practising.

His widow, Lindelwa Isabella, said this frustrated her husband and he was hurting.

"He kept asking how the people he served for so long could be the ones stealing from him. He had treated grandmothers and grandfathers for so many years. He was a part of the community. I tried so hard to convince my husband that the people who looted are just young boys and not the elderly he has been taking care of," she said.

She said that after the looting and a year of not practising, the doctor had to move from the shopping centre and convert one of their properties into a standalone surgery.

"They took my husband away, my friend, my lover, my soulmate, the father of my children. He gave me 33 years of his life. He didn't deserve to die like this," Lindelwa said.

Spokeswoman of the Soweto Independent Practitioners Association, Brenda Sibeko, said that Soweto independent doctors are under siege.

She said Dr Michael is the 29th doctor to be murdered in Soweto since 2019.

"Soweto doctors, we are on our own."
