CONVICTED rapist and murderer Thabo Bester remains in the C-Max section at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Pretoria.

Correctional services set the record straight on Saturday, 15 April, after reports flooded social media that Bester moved back to the Mangaung Correctional Centre (MCC), where he escaped.

"The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has noted false information circulating in various platforms that offender Thabo Bester has been returned to Manguang Correctional Centre.

“We can state that Bester was transported to Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional facility,” Correctional Services spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo said.

Bester appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Friday, 14 April, where he reserved his right to apply for bail.

The court heard through his legal representative Marvin Carpede that he hadn't eaten in 48 hours.

Through his lawyer, Bester submitted that the court grants his request for food to be provided to him by his legal team as he was scared he would be poisoned at the Mangaung Prison.

In the statement, Nxumalo said their department did not receive a complaint of threats to Bester's life.

“The DCS can confirm that there is no complaint filed about threats to his life and that offender Bester is taking meals,” Nxumalo said.

Bester and his alleged girlfriend, Dr Nandipha Magudumana, were arrested in Tanzania and deported back to South Africa.

Allegations are that Dr Nandipha acquired three bodies from a state mortuary in the Free State.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the bodies were acquired to aid Bester in escaping from the correctional facility.

The celebrity doctor has since appeared in court on Thursday, 13 April.

Magudumana faces charges of murder, fraud, aiding and abetting a convicted criminal to escape from prison, and violation of dead bodies.

She returns to court on 17 April.
