TWO men were saved from an angry mob by police officers at Mavalani Village in Giyani on Thursday morning, 30 March.

Community members threatened to kill the two employees of RJT Tech Telecoms hired by Vodacom after they were wrongfully accused of stealing cellphone tower batteries.

Residents went out in large numbers to the tower after being wrongly informed that suspects were caught red-handed stealing the batteries.

The workers were carrying out their duties when they were approached by the mob. They asked the victims about their activities and the company they were affiliated with.

Shortly after they were threatened, they climbed to the top of the aerial tower for their safety.

A resident told Daily Sun the community has been experiencing unstable network connections recently, which they suspected was due to the theft of batteries.

"We were skeptical whether they were workers from Vodacom or they were the ones responsible for stealing cellphone tower batteries," said one of the residents.

Limpopo police spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said cops were called to the scene and managed to rescue the victims unharmed.

"Upon questioning them, it was found that they work for the company which has a tender at Vodacom. Two state motor vehicles were damaged, and two police officers were injured in the process of rescuing those two victims,” Ledwaba said.
