A BIG hole that was left open for months by municipal workers has ultimately been closed.

Residents of Etwatwa in Ekurhuleni were worried about the safety of their children and after Daily Sun ran a story last week about the residents' frustration, the Ekurhuleni Municipality bowed to the pressure and finally closed the hole.

The residents said they were grateful to Daily Sun for making a difference.

Resident Joseph Makhathini said their children can now walk and play freely.

"It was a disaster waiting to happen. That hole accumulated water and it was going to get worse during the coming rainy season. We feared it was going to swallow our children one day," he said.

The residents said they reported the trench several times, but their pleas fell on deaf ears.

"We thank Daily Sun for pushing them, otherwise we would still be living in danger," said Joseph.

Ekurhuleni municipal spokesman Zweli Dlamini said they apologise for the inconvenience caused.

"We urge residents to be the eyes and ears of the municipality in situations which put their lives at risk," said Dlamini.
