THREE contract workers have died on duty on Friday, 11 August around 3.55pm.

One other worker was rushed to hospital in a serious but stable condition, while two others were unharmed.

This come after a trench they were working on collapsed on them on Myburgh Street in Capital Park, Tshwane.

The City of Tshwane's rescue technicians retrieved the third body around 6am on Saturday, 12 August.

According to City of Tshwane Emergency Services spokesman deputy chief Charles Mabaso, the workers were employees of a company that was contracted to the city and were busy with repair work of a sewerage line in Capital Park.

"We retrieved all bodies. We worked the whole night with our rescue technicians and workers of contractors who were operating the earth moving machines," he said.

Mabaso said they couldn't tell what the cause of the collapse was but what they knew was the workers were working inside the trench, repairing a sewerage network.

"It looks like when they were inside the trench, the walls of the trench collapsed on them. They could be many things that could have led a trench to collapse. If the ground is unstable it can collapse or there is a crack," he said.

Mabaso said they would await feedback from the investigators on the actual cause of the collapse.

Resident engineer Thato Mafate said: "We were preparing to show a deep trench. We were replacing a sewer line. We were in the process of showing the trench but unfortunately this sad incident happened. My assistance was part of those men. It's sad."

The SunTeam tried to speak to one of the family members of those who died, but they were still in too much shock to speak.
