RESIDENTS around Cape Town were panicking, and others had to check and close their gas tanks even tighter.
This comes after a gas smell hit their homes and their streets.
The City of Cape Town said they received several calls from people in different areas. complaining about the smell of gas.
Zizipho Mjekula from Langa said she had to go to her kitchen and tighten her gas stove though it was already closed.
“I didn’t know what was happening because the smell was strong. I called the firefighters, who told me they had received several calls from different areas. I had switched off everything in my house, including the TV, because I didn’t want anything that might cause a fire. Even when I stood outside, I could smell the gas,” she said.
Another resident from Mitchells Plain, Ncumisa Mashiya, complained about the same problem.

Ncumisa said she had to ask her neighbours to check their gas tanks since she didn't have one in her house.
Fire and Rescue spokesman Jermaine Carelse said they received numerous calls from areas such as Bonteheuwel, Manenberg, Mitchell’s Plain and Sea Point on Monday, 17 July.
"The Fire & Rescue Service was sent out to investigate but could not locate the source of the smell. Our call centre phoned several entities – Afrox, Astron, the Airport, the Harbour and the Air Pollution department. However, no one reported any gas leaks.
"The situation is being monitored but at this point, the Fire Service is not able to pinpoint the source of the smell. We call on anyone with information that could help shed light on the matter to please report it to our Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700,” said Carelse.
