WHEN cops recently stopped a suspicious looking car, things almost turned deadly. But the worst was miraculously evaded.
Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department police spokeswoman, Lieutenant-Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, said Metro cops were driving east on the N12 when they noticed the car.
"The officers saw a green Nissan Almera with four male occupants. One man was sitting in the back between two men with his head facing down. The officers followed the car as it off ramped on the Snake Road offramp," said Thepa.
She said officers turned on their blue lights and stopped the vehicle. She said when the officers came to a stop and were about to approach the vehicle, the occupants started shooting at them.
Thepa said a petrol tank on the cops' car was shot at.
"The tanker then started leaking and the green Nissan Almera sped off. No one was injured and the police are still looking for the suspects," said Thepa.
Witnesses said it was by God's grace that the tanker didn't catch fire.
"We thank the police for acting swiftly and bringing things under the control. Otherwise, we could have experienced another Boksburg tanker explosion situation," said a bystander.
