ANGRY Protea South residents in Soweto made their way to the Protea Magistrates Court on Thursday, 9 November to show support to an 18-year-old mentally ill girl who was allegedly raped and almost killed by someone she knew.

Residents chanted outside the court demanding that the accused not get bail.

The accused, who faces charges of attempted murder, rape, and kidnapping, briefly appeared in court, where he was keen to conduct his own defence.

But when he heard that the state is opposing bail and his charges fall under schedule six, the accused agreed to a legal representative.

The accused abandoned bail and the matter was postponed to 11 January 2024 for further investigations. The accused will remain in police custody.

Community leader Mpho Mokwena told Daily Sun that the victim is not mentally stable.

“This boy raped this girl and then stabbed her 40 times. We also learnt that the victim was pregnant. But when she got to the hospital, the baby had to be flushed due to the stab wounds being deep and the unborn baby was affected. The accused also inserted a bottle in her private part,” she said.

Mpho said the victim was kidnaped from her home on Saturday, 4 November.

It's alleged that the accused went into the victim's home, dragged her in front of her mentally ill mother and sister and when they tried to fight him, the accused allegedly took out a knife and threatened to stab her.

The victim was found lying in the bushes on the N12 the following day on Sunday.

When the accused went back home, his clothes were full of blood and when he was asked about it, he allegedly confessed what he had done.

“The accused was beaten up by community members before handing him over to the police,” said Mpho.

The victim is still fighting for her life in hospital.
