A JOBURG Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer has been shot and killed by the police during a shoot-out at her home in Dobsonville, Soweto on Saturday, 6 April.
This after the officer allegedly tried to defend her son for reckless driving.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesman Phaladi Shuping said the incident resulted in the death of a JMPD officer, who is allegedly the driver's mother.
“It's alleged that the police officers were on patrol when they saw a car that was driving recklessly, and they tried to stop it. The driver did not stop, and the police pursued the car until it stopped at a certain house in Monaisa Street in Dobsonville,” said Shuping.

He said the police officers allegedly approached the driver and asked him why he was driving recklessly and refused to stop when they pulled him over.
“They allegedly told him they are placing him under arrest for reckless and negligent driving. The JMPD officer, who is allegedly the mother of the driver, got out of the house and had an argument with the police officers. She allegedly told them that she is going to get her gun, went into the house and started shooting at the police officers,” he said.
According to Shuping, the police officers allegedly returned fire and the JMPD officer was fatally wounded.
“JMPD expresses deep sadness over the passing of Officer Linda Mthimkhulu, who was off duty at the time of the incident. The matter is being investigated by both the SAPS and Ipid,” said JMPD spokesman Superintendent Xolani Fihla.
