FALLEN heroes who died during political violence in Ekurhuleni were remembered.

On Monday 1 May, former members of the Self-Defence Unit and Amabutho gathered at the D.H. Williams Community Centre in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni to remember those who lost their lives.

The chairman of the MKVA in Ekurhuleni and former member of the Self-Defence Unit, Mchacho Mngomezulu said he lost four family members - his mother, brother, gogo and mkhulu.

“They were killed in 1993 after being allegedly attacked in the house. They are among the people whose names are engraved in the Thokoza memorial of those who died. It was an emotional moment when I saw their names on the memorial. They may not be here anymore, but we will always remember them,” he said.

Eugene Mogomotsi of the Bricks Africa Alliance said they invited former president Jacob Zuma to attend to be part of the commemoration.

He said they visited the Thokoza Memorial in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni, to remember the fallen heroes.

“We are here to honour the memory of the living and fallen architects of our political freedom that we enjoy today,” said Mogomotsi.

He said the event also aims to highlight the plight of former Self-Defence Unit members.

“They are not taken care of. They are not offered financial support.

“It is sad that they are forgotten heroes among the people who fought for the freedom of this country.”
