EASTER roadblocks will continue until Monday, 1 April.

This is to ensure that holidaymakers get to their destinations safely over the Easter weekend.

The SAPS, Ekurhuleni Metro Cops, Gauteng Traffic Police and other law enforcement agencies jointly monitored traffic on the N12, Etwatwa exit this afternoon.

The high volume of traffic worried some of the motorists.

The SAPS National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, and the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant- General Tommy Mthombeni, were at the N12 roadblock.
A traveller who was on his way to Mbombela in Mpumalanga said he had hoped to arrive earlier, but the number of roadblocks he had already encountered made this impossible.

One woman had to pull over to the side of the road because her car had overheated and she had been stuck in heavy traffic for a while.

"I have to pick up a relative on the way and I am afraid it's going to get dark soon and I'm not sure where he is," said one motorist.

National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola and the Gauteng police commissioner, Lieutenant- General Tommy Mthombeni, were at the roadblock in Etwatwa.

Masemola said they will work throughout the weekend to ensure that travellers arrive alive.

"Eastbound traffic is heavy but we're happy that all operations across the country are going well."

He said they have arrested more than 100 undocumented foreigners in Gauteng.

He said they will also step up their operations on Monday to ensure the safety of travellers.
