LAW enforcement agencies joined hands to clean up Katlehong North, in Ekurhuleni.

This as the police station has been experiencing high number of contact crimes recently.

Murder, rape, armed robbery, robbery and assault with grievous bodily harm are some of the contact crimes.

On Thursday, 4 January SAPS joined by Ekurhuleni metro cops, crime wardens and other law enforcement agencies joined hands to bring order in Katlehong.

Motorists were stopped and searched and fingerprint verifications were conducted to check for wanted suspects. Pedestrians were also stopped and searched.

Ekurhuleni police Commissioner Major General Annah Sithole said Operation Shanela for a safer festive season was aimed at enforcing the authority of the state, and helping the local police station in reducing crime.

"The festive season is not over yet. We're still working to ensure the safety of our citizens," she said.

She said the reason why Katlehong North was visited, was because of high contact crime in the area.

"We're still continuing with what we were doing during the festive season. We have to show them that there's no space for them in Ekurhuleni," she said.

More than 200 suspects were arrested for various crimes. Eight illegal immigrants were bust, three suspects were arrested for drugs ranging from mandrax, nyaope and crystal meth. Three secondhand goods stores and a shebeen were closed for non-compliance.

Sithole said traffic fines to the value of R9 000 were issued by EMPD.

"We'll continue to show police visibility and stamping authority," she said.

The nationwide Safer Festive Season Operations were launched by Police Minister Bheki Cele in October 2023 in the Western Cape.

Operations under the Operation Shanela umbrella conduct regular roadblocks, stop and searches and the tracking and tracing of wanted suspects during the holiday season, and beyond.
