COPS at Ramokonopi copshop upped their communication skills with sign language training.

Officials from Deaf SA visited the station on Monday, 20 November, and gave basic lessons to the first responders of crime on how to deal with people who have a hearing impairment.

Police spokeswoman Captain Neldah Sekgobela said that sign language is now an official language therefore everyone has the right to be addressed to the language they understand more especially the deaf community.

She said the workshop came at the right time to give police an understanding of the sign language to help speed up the process of opening dockets for deaf people.

During the session, John Maltese who has deaf impairment presented the session while showing some demonstrations, on the other hand, Senzie Motha who is the sign language interpreter in the presence of social worker Maudie Dibakwane who monitored if no one violated one another's rights while providing counseling services.

“At the end, Police together with Crime Prevention Wardens who were in attendance were also tasked to participate in role plays using sign language to communicate with one another,” she said.

She said Lieutenant Colonel Alice Maele, who is the vispol support commander together with relief commander Lieutenant Colonel Jonas Sodi were so pleased with such an initiative as it speaks directly with frontline workers ( community service center) and operational members (crime prevention).
