POLICE who were following up on information about a hijacked vehicle in Nyanga ended up recovering firearms and ammunition.
Police spokesman Captain Frederick van Wyk said on Sunday, 10 September 2023, cops from the provincial flying squad got a tip-off and followed up on information about a vehicle that was parked at a house in Nyanga. When cops arrived at the house, they found the vehicle and searched it.
Cops found a Dash Prod automatic rifle with 28 rounds and a 9mm pistol with 16 rounds under the seats of the stolen vehicle. Both firearms had their serial numbers filed off. The cops continued with their search and recovered the vehicle. They subsequently arrested three suspects aged between 28 and 36.

“The suspects were detained at Nyanga SAPS on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and the possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition. The suspects are due to appear in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 13 September 2023 on the mentioned charges,” said Van Wyk.
Residents from the area said the house where the bust occurred has always been suspicious.
“A lot of suspicious activities always take place at the house. We are happy that cops have arrested these people and it confirmed our suspicions,” said one resident.
Meanwhile, cops are still investigating after a law enforcement officer was murdered in Nyanga earlier in August.
Officer Zamikhaya Kwinana was with other officers when gunmen fired shots and shot him in the head on 4 August, a day after a taxi strike started in Cape Town. His colleagues rushed her to a nearby hospital where he died on arrival.
