OPERATION Okae Molao was in full force in Sandton, north of Joburg on Thursday morning, 23 March.

During the operation, motorists were stopped and searched for anything illegal.

Delivery trucks and most bakkies were not spared, and the search even went far as inspecting the bonnets, boots and engines for any tempering.

Addressing the media, Gauteng deputy police commissioner, Major-General Tommy Mthombeni, said the first phase of the operation began on Wednesday night, 22 March and saw at least 932 wanted suspects arrested.

"Out of the 932, about 210 of the suspects were of gender-based violence," said Mthombeni.

Mthombeni said this was a joint operation with Home Affairs.

Two people were arrested for possession of drugs, while two vehicles, which were mini buses, were confiscated.

The operation then proceeded to Ginger Park informal settlement on Wiliam Nicol in Sandton, where the police searched every corner leaving no stone unturned.

Unfortunately there were no arrests, however, community members raised concerns of gender-based violence (GBV) in the area.

A resident said not a weekend goes by without a woman crying for help.

"We will try to reach out to the police but we hope our phones won't switch off abruptly because we don't have electricity here.

"One day you will find one of us dead. You forgive these men today and next week they hurt you again," the resident told Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, who was also part of the operation.

Mawela said they would return to the community to engage with them on steps to be taken moving forward.

"We will engage with the MEC's office so that During the roadblock, at least 70 undocumented foreigners were arrested.
