A FIRE broke out at the University of South Africa (Unisa) Muckleneuk Campus on the second floor of the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Building on Wednesday, 21 December.
Unisa spokesman Thabo Charles Mabaso said the fire broke out at about 12.59am.
He said firefighting personnel from the City of Tshwane Emergency Services were dispatched to the scene, where they noticed dense smoke billowing from the building. They had to force entry into several doors in order to gain access into the building to extinguish the fire.
“Firefighters managed to locate the seat of the fire in the building,” Mabaso said in a statement.
He said a pile of books were found burning in various places on the second floor and extinguished.
He further said the second floor suffered extensive smoke and water damage, and part of the third floor also suffered smoke damage.
“According to sources at the scene, a fire had broken out in the same building about two weeks ago and was extinguished by staff, and emergency services were never notified,” he said, adding that the cost of the damage and cause of the fire were yet to be determined.
