UNIVERSITY of Pretoria (UP) SRC, students, classmates and friends of the late Thapelo Menwe held a vigil in his honour.
The 23-year-old was shot last Saturday outside the varsity’s residence.
The students gathered where he was shot and sang struggle songs, recited poems and said shared words of comfort.
His friend Legodi Legodi said he was studying when he got a call from Thapelo’s younger brother.
“I was with him sharing a laugh just the other day and playing games. Little did we know that those were our last games with him. I don’t want to be mean or insensitive but when I found out about it, I wanted all hell to break loose,” he said.
Other students expressed how they felt.
“It’s not okay that we are in this situation. I’d like to thank everyone for being here. We failed Thapelo,” said SRC secretary Tarik Lalla.
Another student said: “I didn’t know Thapelo but the way he was taken was not right. The police are right here and we have security, but this happens. I don’t need to know you to understand that you can be next.”
