TWO more suspects in the Soshanguve New Year's mass shooting, who were arrested on Saturday, 6 January, will appear in the Soshanguve Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 9 January.

The shooting in Soshanguve's notorious section, informally called Jukulyn, saw four people being killed.

The deceased include Constable Mpho Kgobotlo (30), a cop who was stationed at OR Tambo International Airport, Phomolo Malakapatlo (28), Thandi Dlamini (34), and 14-year-old Vuyolethu Ziwela.

Tshepo Stompie Masombuka and Sipho Rusty Kgomo appeared in the Soshanguve Magistrates Court on Thursday, 4 January, charged with four counts of murder and one of attempted murder.

According to one of the mourners who attended one of the funerals, panic spread throughout the area after the burial.

"There was another shooting on the day of the burials, but no one was injured. A taxi was also set alight by someone we don't know," said the mourner.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed the arson incident.

"On a separate incident to the funeral, a taxi was torched on Saturday evening in a yard, and a malicious damage to property case was opened for further investigations," she said.

Since the deadly shooting, social media users have been sharing information about what they suspect could have been the motive of the killings.

In some videos, the junior cop flashed costly brands such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci.

He was also shot and killed in an expensive Golf 7 GTI, which is believed to be his.

National police spokeswoman Brigadier Athlenda Mathe could neither confirm nor deny the social media claims.

"Investigations are at a sensitive stage. Those who are alleged to have been involved in corrupt activities at OR Tambo Airport were subjected to disciplinary action and removed from the airport. Vetting, including lifestyle audits, is continuously being conducted on members with a priority on those attached to national key points and high-risk environments to ensure the integrity of SAPS members.

"This is not the first time that police at the airport have been accused of illegal activities. In August 2020, 17 police officers, ranging in rank from constable to a warrant officer, were arrested following what the Hawks described as an extensive investigation into their alleged criminal conduct," said Mathe.
