A MUNICIPAL official was arrested for allegedly murdering a provincial traffic officer he caught with his wife at a lodge in Mpumalanga.

The 38-year-old Mbombela Municipality Bylaw Enforcement Officer allegedly shot and killed the traffic officer on Saturday, 15 April.

Mpumalanga Hawks spokeswoman Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi said the provincial traffic officer, and a lady friend, believed to be the suspect's wife, were booked at Kwanyoni Lodge on the N4 about 15km outside Nelspruit that day.

Sekgotodi said that while the two were in their chalet, the suspect came out nowhere and kicked open the door.

She said:

There was an altercation as a broken beer bottle was found. It is further alleged that the traffic official ran out of the chalet and the husband followed him as he fired shots."

According to Sekgotodi, the victim was shot twice and succumbed to his injuries while the suspect fled the scene.

"When the hawks, Nelspruit VISPOL and Nelspruit Local Criminal Record Centre arrived at the scene, they attempted to call the suspect.

"It turned out that the suspect handed himself over to the Nelspruit police where his firearm, which was used in the alleged crime was seized," said Sekgotodi.

She said the municipal official faces charges of murder and has been detained pending his first appearance in the Nelspruit Magistrate Court soon.
