Dr Khangelani Sibiya, who said he can't wait to represent Mzansi in the USA.

FOR more than a decade, this maths and science guru has been a lifesaver for most pupils across Mzansi.

Dr Khangelani "Babes weMaths" Sibiya has helped many pupils who were struggling with maths and science subjects.

Sibiya is from Richards Bay in northern KZN now needs help from Mzansi people.

He has been nominated for two global awards where he will represent Mzansi in the education categories, but he needs help to cover the travelling costs.

He's expected to leave the country on Monday, 8 January to attend the IOER International Pinnacle Awards, which will be held in the USA on Wednesday, 10 January.

Sibiya then has to be in Dubai on 14 January to attend the Global Education Awards, where he'll represent both himself and his organisation.

"I've been trying to pay for a flight to the US, but I need a connection from the US to Dubai for the Global Education Awards. I'm reaching out to anyone who can help me with accommodation and travelling expenses," he said.

He will be competing in the Most Inspiring Global Educator category at the IOER International Pinnacle Awards.

He's nominated in the Outstanding Educational Influencer of the Year category at the Global Education Awards and his school, KWV Maths and Science Training, is nominated in the Exceptional School-Best Practise category.

"Receiving these accolades from abroad is not only a great achievement for me, but also flies the flag for Mzansi on the world stage. We are far behind with our education system, but such recognition means that we are moving in the right direction as a country," he said.

He said the problem was that he only learnt about the awards in the US when it was already too late and he only budgeted for the awards in Dubai.

“Now it's a bit difficult because I have to be at the awards ceremony in the US because it's the first time we are participating as Mzansi and it's a chance to showcase our country at these awards. For me, winning is the cherry on the cake because just being nominated is a big win because so many countries are taking part,” he said.

Sibiya said he dreams of Mzansi being at the top in maths and science, adding that he'll continue to help pupils from all walks of life and reach out especially in the rural areas.
