THERE are less than 30 days left until matric pupils sit for their final exams and everyone in the education fraternity is working to equip them with the right skills.
The Where to Start: Maths and Science (WTS) organisation is also hosting the grade 12s for their annual Last Dance Camp where they revise everything they have done in the syllabus, and equip them with skills on how to approach the exams.
The organisation, which specialises mostly in maths and science, kick started their seven-day bootcamp on Monday, 2 October and the camp will end on Sunday, 8 October. This year’s camp is held at Dirkie Uys Primary School in Durban, with close to 200 pupils across the povince in attendance.
Grade 12 pupil Nqubeko Mthethwa from Tholokuhle High School in Richards Bay said he expects to gain skills on how to tackle the exams and how to excel in maths and science.
“I believe that after spending seven days in this camp, I'll come out a different person. I've already learnt a lot of things in the two days in this camp,” he said.

Grade 11 pupil Reece Magwaza from Vera High School in Vryheid said he attended the camp because he is preparing himself for grade 12 in 2024.
“I want to pass with flying colours. Here, they us taught how to approach exam questions and this is a skill I'll treasure until my last paper,” said Reece.
Earlier in 2023, the organisation walked away with the Best School of the Year Award at the Global Education Awards which were held in Dubai, while its founder, Dr Khangelani Sibiya, known as "Babes WeMaths", walked away with the Excellence in Leadership Award.
Sibiya said their goal is for maths and science to be the most preferred subjects at schools.
“We host quarterly camps where we host pupils from different provinces and schools to help them with all the subjects, but mostly maths and science, which are still problematic for many pupils in this country,” said Sibiya.
He said that the Last Dance Camp is the last camp to prepare pupils for their final exams.
“But we don't only accommodate grade 12s. We welcome all grades from grade 8 as they're also studying for their end of the year exams. It's class after class for the five days. We help them tackle exam questions, and we also cover the work of all four terms,” said Sibiya.
The organisation will host their annual study leave mini-camp in October 2023, where they'll have one on one engagements with pupils on the subjects they're struggling with.
